Provide unconditional nurture, support, and hope to students in unstable housing situations through transforming relationships, inspiring positive personal and societal change.
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.
Our partners are the citizens of greater Richmond: students, teachers, volunteers. Faith communities. Work communities. Service organizations. Everyone who wants to work together to change the lives of our students and their families.
Our summer project is to create a welcoming space for our students that they can call their own. A Space of Our Own will double as a student lounge and office for Change the World RVA volunteers. Students may drop in to use laptops and WiFi, join us for lunch or just snack on fresh fruit and cold water, check out a book, work with volunteers to get ready for college, or help us decorate. We will have a small refrigerator, Keurig coffee maker, and a printer to make the space even cozier. To find out how you can help us make the coolest space ever, please check out our Wish List or visit our Facebook Page.
My name is Elaine Williams, and I am a first generation high school graduate as well as a first generation college student. It has been a great challenge for me to stay in college due to lack of family support, housing instability, and financial hardship, but I remain determined to stay focused and succeed in getting my college degree. I have managed to create a supportive community of caring adults as well as group of peers and friends who are committed to succeeding in school. I have succeeded in holding down a steady part-time job at Ellwood Thompson’s where I enjoy the customers and earn a decent wage. My dream is to become a teacher because I want to be able to give back to students in low-income schools. I think that through my own experience, I can motivate them to make the most of their educational opportunities.
